We Are Made of Our Relationships

On loneliness, connection, and Father Zosima's radical idea that we are responsible for everyone.

In The Brothers Karamazov, the elder Zosima says something that sounds impossible: 'We are all responsible to all for all.' Not just to those we have wronged. Not just to those close to us. To all, for all. It sounds like mystical hyperbole. But there is a secular version of this claim — a relational claim — that modern physics has been inching toward for decades. Objects don't have properties in isolation. Properties arise from relationships.

Set coupling to maximum and watch the entities converge on a shared state. Lower it and the universe fragments into pockets of local coherence. Loneliness, in this model, is high decay with low coupling. No signal reaches far enough to matter.

Father Zosima's teaching in The Brothers Karamazov is centred on a single, impossible-sounding idea: 'We are all responsible to all for all, and I more than all others.' Not just responsible to those we have wronged, or those close to us, or those in our community. To all, for all. Every person's life is entangled with every other person's in a web so dense that the boundaries between self and other are not quite real.

The loneliness of isolation

Albert Camus, who shared almost nothing with Dostoevsky theologically, arrived at the same observation from the other direction: the absurdity of the human condition is that we exist as distinct centres of experience, unable to fully communicate, each sealed inside our own skull — and yet we desperately need each other. The Stranger is Meursault's tragedy not because he commits murder but because he has already murdered his connections to others long before. He has made himself a singularity in a relational universe.

Carlo Rovelli's relational interpretation of quantum mechanics says that a particle has no properties independent of its interactions with other systems. Position, spin, momentum — all of these are properties of relationships, not of the particle alone. There are no isolated objects. Only interactions, and the properties that interactions produce. An entity with no interactions has no properties. It doesn't quite exist in any measurable sense.

What the simulation shows

Each entity in the sandbox has no intrinsic charge. Charge accumulates through signal exchange with nearby entities. Without interaction, charge decays to zero. At maximum coupling, entities converge rapidly into shared states — something like the solidarity Zosima describes. At minimum coupling, the system fragments. Each entity reaches its small local equilibrium and stops. A universe of people doing the same.

Loneliness is not merely the absence of people. It is the absence of signal exchange that reaches far enough and lasts long enough to build a shared state. You can be surrounded by people and still decay toward zero if none of the interactions couple deeply.
